ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide some evidence on the industrial diversification of the world’s leading multinational companies. Our sample of enterprises is the 430 firms reported upon by Stopford, Dunning and Haberich (1980). This includes all the world’s major $1 billion-turnover industrial corporations that had significant international investments during 1978, excluding firms in banking, insurance, commodity broking, retailing, engineering contracting and other service industries.
