ABSTRACT

Now that we have learned about the importance of using collaborative, strengths-based language to facilitate growth, development, and positive change with youth in residential programs, it’s time to put what we have learned to work. We begin this chapter by exploring how the “fi rst impressions” of youth and RYCWs infl uence initial contacts. We’ll then explore how RYCWs can engage youth in ways that open up possibilities in initial contacts such as crisis hotlines and face-to-face assessments.
