I woke from a difficult sleep early the next morning. It was still heavy with rain. I brushed my teeth in the faculty bathroom with the toothbrush that I also use to remove the dust from the waxy leaves of my succulent plants, and sat down at my desk. It was early, and no one else had arrived yet. For an hour, I worked on the funding proposal that would never succeed. Then I went for coffee.
