ABSTRACT
By the end of November, the days are short and often dark and we have to remind ourselves that winter hasn’t even started! When 21 December eventually arrives, it is almost Christmas and yet the astronomical winter has only just begun. Many people prefer to think of winter as starting on 1 November so the winter solstice falls midway, and this is referred to as the meteorological winter. There are, therefore, several opinions as to when winter officially begins, and it also depends on the country where you live, even if it is in the same hemisphere.
