ABSTRACT

Using the natural materials offered by the earth, children have a chance to build up the very primeval connection that we are in danger of losing. Observing young children playing with sand and mud enables us to see just how deeply involved they become. A normally active two-year-old can spend a long time just poking around with a stick in some squelchy mud, whilst three-year-olds in a sandpit begin to show a depth of imagination as they create cakes, pies, buildings and road networks.
