ABSTRACT

Sports notational analysis is the systematic recoding and interpretation of a performance, with the intent of reducing the subjectivity and bias, inherent in human observation. The detail of this analysis is remarkable and yet there is scant evidence of any other rugby analyses, at this level, in the subsequent 75 years. However, the use of sports notation by both academic researchers and applied practitioners has grown markedly in the last few decades, coinciding with technological developments and the full professionalization of the games of rugby football. In terms of assessing winning and losing performance, the only published study assessed available statistics to identify which performance indicators contributed to success, in terms of whether or not a team qualified for the finals series of the National Rugby League (NRL). The depth and scope of research focusing on the performance analysis of rugby football, and the number of researchers who are active in this field, continues to grow.
