Tweaking an Imperfect System

Even after the FCC approved a massive expansion in the latitude that broadcasters had to experiment with HD Radio, the technology was still not on solid ground. Problems of interference on the AM band effectively halted its proliferation there, and although such challenges existed to a lesser degree on FM, HD’s proponents again moved in a counterintuitive direction, hoping to facilitate uptake of the technology by effectively raising the probability of harm it would cause to the legacy analog broadcast system. While technical tweaks have continued in an effort to maximize the inherent utility of the HD system, they have had little to no effect on broadcaster or listener interest in the technology.
