ABSTRACT

Most of the contributors to this volume share the privilege of having been involved in the process by which the concept of imagery reemerged in modern cognitive psychology. One of the critical landmarks in the revival of the concept four decades ago was the theoretical paper that Allan Paivio published in Psychological Review in 1969 (see Figure 9.1). This paper reviewed empirical findings demonstrating the effectiveness of using mental images in learning and memory, but, still more importantly, it argued for the explanatory and heuristic value of the imagery concept in psychology.
