Some basics about dissertations

In the previous chapter we started to look at the various challenges that a dissertation presents you with. A dissertation is a significant piece of self-directed work in which you will demonstrate your skills, knowledge and competence in conducting independent research. Although it may appear to be a dauntingly large exercise to attempt, we have suggested that the best approach is to break the dissertation down into a number of more manageable tasks related to the major components of the dissertation. Each of these tasks can be project-managed on its own. By adopting this sort of approach, not only will you be able to make more regular progress, but also you will learn to monitor and evaluate your own work more effectively and continuously. You may not realize this, but monitoring and self-evaluation are vital skills to take from the dissertation to the next step in your career path.
