Emerging options for solving the arsenic problems of rural and periurban areas in Latin America

A household methodology was developed by CEPIS-PAHO1 in Peru, using ALUFLOC, a mixture of an oxidant (hypochlorite), activated clays (As adsorbents and ion exchangers) and a coagulant [aluminium sulfate Al2(SO4)3 or ferric chloride (FeCl3)]. This methodology was tested in Puno (Peru) and removed up to 98% of the dissolved As (initial As: 1000 μg/L).
