Heat and work The concept of work is very subtle but widely based. As shown in Table 1, the thermodynamic notion of work covers not only mechanical work, but also surface, electrical, gravitational, and expansion work. Work is therefore one more type of energy transfer. In the present context, an important example of a system doing work is that of an expanding gas.
