ABSTRACT

In 1952, the National Health Service was formed. Included within it was the Department of Health Education. Health education activities throughout the country were given official status in 1954 with the creation of the Health and Education Joint Commission, the structure of which is described. Health education has played an important role in improving the nation’s health. Training programmes for health educators are described, as are specific health education initiatives. Future priorities centre on specific issues such as cancer and sexually transmitted diseases, training, health education in the community and evaluation of health education.
