ABSTRACT

Staff development including teacher training, carrying out educational reforms at the grass root level, disseminating and sustaining educational innovations – all these are difficult propositions for any institution. This chapter records some experiences of the Technical Teachers’ Training Institute, Bhopal (TTTI Bhopal) over the last 20 years, in which it has changed from a straightforward technical teachers’ training institute to an external change agent for the technician education system in India. It also describes changes in the form and content of teacher training over the years. TTTҐs contribution to curriculum development work in the technician education system is discussed. A few innovations – planned change, design and development of a laboratory course known as the engineering experimentation course, and introduction of a comprehensive scheme of assessment have been taken as examples to bring out the various aspects which influence the process of change. Change strategies adopted by TTTI are also described. It was necessary that TTTI itself should have a structure conducive to working as an external change agent. Structural changes in TTTI to achieve this end are also described.
