ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by looking at the historical antecedents in the community education field, particularly in the USA and UK, and goes on to point out some modern developments.

The chapter highlights six management issues for the community school which differ from those found in the ‘ordinary’ school. From these it draws attention to new challenges arising from changing societal factors.

Finally, the chapter examines likely future outcomes and recommends an approach from the UK which sees schools becoming ‘neighbourhood learning centres’.
