ABSTRACT

In physics, the momentum of an object in motion is the product of the object's mass and its velocity. An object that is already in motion requires less force to keep it moving in the same direction than a stationary object of the same mass. This has led to the term “momentum” being used in sport to represent events being influenced by preceding events. If a match is moving in a particular direction, it is likely to continue in that direction unless there is a change in momentum. The idea is that if events have been performed successfully, the player or team has momentum and this makes it more likely that subsequent events will be performed successfully than if the preceding events had not been successful. There is certainly a perception of momentum in sport with commentators frequently using the term in various sports. Tennis is no exception and commentators use the term in the majority of televised matches.
