ABSTRACT

In the modern era of the Olympic Games, boxing became an official sport in 1904, during the IIIrd summer Olympic Games, in St Louis, USA (https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780203080443/a06dfb5d-e762-47c2-8353-ce4a9acc3456/content/www.aiba.org" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">www.aiba.org). Rules, weight categories and the duration of a boxing contest have changed during the last century, and in particular, there has been a change in the assessment of performance. Initially, verdicts were given by means of a scorecard that reported a subjective decision made by judges at the end of each round; in brief, judges gave an overall opinion on boxer's fighting performance (e.g., technique, tactic, strategy, style, number of hits, etc.) purely based on their expertise. A final decision of the contest's winner was then provided.
