ABSTRACT

Education research is undertaken in universities, the State Department of Education, the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (a semi-autonomous national organization), and various voluntary and some commercial organizations. There are some 50 full-time educational researchers and numerous part-timers in the country.

A relatively modest first 40 years has been followed since the 1960s by increased activity in all sectors, with greater financial and public support following. Research undertaken tends to be concerned with matters related to learning, teaching and evaluation. Controversial issues of national moment whether political, economic, philosophical or ideological are seldom confronted. Funding comes mostly from the government, either directly or indirectly, a matter not without significance for the autonomy and independence of researchers and the development of critical analyses of prevailing conditions.
