ABSTRACT

Education is concerned with helping people to be both more autonomous and more responsible to society in their choices. Computers', and especially computers linked through telecommunications, can be an effective means of achieving both aspects of the educational goal. On the one hand, for instance, personal computers' with the LOGO' language are a wonderful vehicle for developing abstract knowledge-based potency (Papert, 1980), and on the other hand, computers and video systems used by groups of people linked into networks' can be used to teach co-operation and altruism (Turoff, 1975; Stodolsky, 1981).
