ABSTRACT

First, communications technology can be used to transmit teaching to learners at a distance, 'live' and 'in real-time' . For example, educational radio and television could be seen as the classic examples of what I would like to call live/transmitted media. Here the term 'live' is being used in a particular way. It means that the student is receiving the teaching which is sent to him over a distance at a specific point in time. The maths lesson is transmitted from 9.00 am to 9.30 am. The student who switches on at 9.31 am misses it. The term 'live' is not being used here in the traditional broadcasting sense of a programme being transmitted as it is being made, ie live from a studio or outside broadcast.
