ABSTRACT

Summary: This survey of education and race relations in the United Kingdom starts with an examination of the political background of an all-party desire to combat racial discrimination and disadvantage. The task is both to meet the special needs of racial minorities and to prepare all pupils for life in a multiracial society. Research evidence on the needs and achievement of Black children is presented under eight headings. In moving towards an effective educational policy to avoid racism, discrimination and hatred, government support and advice is needed, together with adequate funding earmarked for racially disadvantaged groups. Within this context, local authorities could develop comprehensive and co-ordinated strategies for helping schools to respond to the changing needs.
