ABSTRACT

Yet Calcutta is a city of the first magnitude, a real metropolis. Few urban concentrations in the world are so populous, probably none is so congested at the heart of the city and none, perhaps, exerts so extensive a range of urban influence. It is also a city of many splendours. It has parks, green lawns, art centres and numerous theatres, museums and cinema houses that are floodlit at night, glowing with a seductive amber brilliance.
