ABSTRACT

The third section of this book is devoted to a number of cases of educational and training programmes arranged by companies, work organizations and local and regional training centrcs. The focus of discussion, therefore, is different from previous sections in that the role of the employer and the particular demands of work organizations for trained staff are at the centre of our attention, rather than national policy or educational systems. The employer is concerned with meeting immediate problems for manning an organization with appropriately trained employees. He also has to plan his requirements in the short, medium and long term. These requirements lead to concern for the occupational choices made by present and future employees and their career aspirations. A second theme of these cases, therefore, has to be the degree of success of the programme in question in meeting both employer requirements and employee demands for adequate and acceptable training facilities throughout their careers.
