ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses social memories of Huang Daxian (HDX) through examining publications and oral narratives of HDX legends and stories. It shows how the recollection of stories of HDX is constructed, reconfigurated, related to the present and future interests of the government and locals in Jinhua. The chapter explores how legends of HDX are revived, selected, and promoted for temple-building projects and place-making purposes. Cadres at different local government offices, local intellectuals, and even villagers believe that HDX could be used as cultural capital to promote the growth of tourism and hence the local economy. Knowledge and memories of Jinhua as the hometown of HDX were believed to be helpful for developing Jinhuas economy. Apart from legends, historical evidence of temples dedicated to HDX was also cited to highlight that Jinhua was the hometown of the immortal.
