Enslavement to Emancipation
Isabella Bomefree, later to be known as Sojourner Truth, knew enslavement from the moment of her birth and, in a certain way, even before. She was born enslaved, to parents who had been enslaved all their lives. Her parents, in turn, had inherited their bondage from their own enslaved parents. Th ere are no genealogical records or written histories for the family. We can only speculate, based on general practices in slave trading, as to how Isabella’s grandparents probably arrived and lived in the United States. Her grandparents had, in all likelihood, been born in Africa, where they might already have been enslaved or, at some point, had fallen into captivity.
