ABSTRACT

Adolescent literacy is a growing concern for policymakers and educators. The literacy expectations and demands on students continue to grow, and, in the past two decades, greater attention has been paid to the needs of adolescents in reading instruction. The reading skills adolescents need to handle the more complex texts and reading tasks they are expected to master in middle and high school have been identified and teachers across content areas are expected to provide instruction not only in their content areas but also in reading strategy instruction. ELA teachers must prepare students for federally mandated testing, and the majority of these tests require students to answer reading comprehension questions about non-fiction texts.
