ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a toolbox for prescribers on medication use during lactation. It presents evidence-based information to mothers which is at variance with that supplied by other healthcare professionals. The book also provides an overview of the anatomy and physiology of the breast together with the hormonal influences on breast milk production. It reviews the specific biological components of breast milk. The book also presents a brief overview of the evidence base of resultant health benefits for mother and child. It focuses on the management of common conditions that may affect the mother or baby during the period of lactation. The book offers a counselling model approach with mothers – listening to their concerns, providing information and involving them in decision-making, rather than providing advice and recommendations.
