ABSTRACT
We all assume that we know what is meant by “reading”, but reading a book is very different from reading a short text. The book will tell a story or convey information (fiction/non-fiction); the much briefer texts presented to language learners may do the same, but their prime purpose is usually to instruct or to assess. We shall examine each form in the order normally experienced by students.
