ABSTRACT

The Internet is a world-wide system of interconnected computer networks. The Internet allows us to access the World Wide Web, which is the collective term for all the resources that are available via the Internet. Originally the Internet and World Wide Web was the province of highly technical users, mostly scientists who used it to share data. Two particular pieces of technology have facilitated effective use of the Internet for us ordinary folks: the browser; and the search engine. The main piece of software to do anything online is a browser. There are many browsers around, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses however, these three for particular reasons: Internet Explorer (IE); Firefox; Chrome. There are many ways to search for material online however, to most of us searching is synonymous with the Google search engine. However, there are other ways to go: Existing subject-specific search tools; Custom search engines.
