ABSTRACT

The impression given in the Praeface that magic neither encouraged nor detracted from practical and level-headed scientific work is reinforced by the record of Dee’a actual activities in the period between his return to England after publishing the Monas and 1583 when he dropped almost everything to pursue enlightenment and riches in the East. These activities spanned the broad range of interests that had emerged during the earlier years of his life, and included a number of mathematical works, alchemical experiments, consultation on English voyages of exploration, and continued interest in theology and spirit magic.
