ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides an apology by the author to his 10-year-old son, Henry, for his complete hypocrisy. The author was disturbed by him asking if the author could have a YouTube channel. Henry and his friend had simply Googled how do we make a YouTube video and discovered a video-creation app that allowed them to create animations and the soundtrack for them. The book also traces the development of mass media and the rise of computing whilst and it explores the first element of the digital revolution: the material transformation of analogue forms into digital forms. Whilst the author's childhood media world and his parents were recognisably similar, there is a chasm between his childhood world and his sons. Though one might easily dismiss his YouTube video when compared with the output, audience and impact of major broadcasters such as the BBC.
