ABSTRACT

Part IV hews back to an observation made in the Introduction: that a major reason for the present prominence of the research agenda treated in this book is the increasing focus on the consequences of democracy. In this chapter, we discuss the relationship between democracy/democratization and external warfare and internal conflicts, respectively. In the next chapter we shift focus to economic growth and distribution. In that connection, we also briefly discuss the normative and scientific import of studying democracy’s consequences in the first place.
