Thames Gateway: Thurrock and Barking

The Thames Gateway, Europe’s largest brownfi eld regeneration project, was initiated to deliver environmental and social regeneration in terms of goals such as economic growth, housing and educational facilities across London, Essex and Kent. This chapter examines governance procedures relating to Thames Gateway projects through focusing on local community, housing and other project outputs. Through examining the governance structures and the roles of key actors, the chapter draws upon the policy networks approach and argues that the regeneration projects (despite initial criticism regarding too many actors in governance procedures) have been delivered by a few powerful actors such as agencies acting on behalf of government.
