Women in Science, Engineering and Technology: The Rising Tide Report and Beyond
On 24 February 1994 a booklet, entitled The Rising Tide, was published by the Cabinet Office through Her Majesty's Stationery Office. It was concerned with the current position of women employed in scientific pursuits within the UK and I was chair of the working party which wrote the document. In this chapter I will draw on my experience of working on the report, together with some of the findings which it included, in order to explore the difficulties still encountered by women wishing to follow scientific careers. The fact that the British government initially supported the working party , but subsequently felt unable to endorse some of its more important proposals, is indicative of the kinds of public and political obstacles which women still face.
