ABSTRACT

In order to make an assessment of the emigrants and remittances from Kerala, the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) conducted four large-scale surveys over the last 10 years — in 1998, 2003, 2007 and 2008. This chapter is based on the Kerala Migration Survey (KMS) 2008, funded by the Department of Non-Resident Keralite Affairs, Government of Kerala and the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India 1 and documents both trends in emigration and remittances. In the 2008 survey, the sample size was enhanced to 15,000 households from 10,000 households and it is expected to yield reliable migration estimates at the district and taluk levels in Kerala.
