Community Benefi ts: Communities under Stress

Part of the social income that people obtain comes from what may be called community organisations or institutional arrangements, which include family transfers and local transfers from nonfamilial bodies. Community is one of those vague but conceptually rich words, embracing spatial and relational aspects of living. A community organisation is an association to which individuals can choose to belong or to which they may be socially or culturally obliged to belong.
