ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the policy implications that stem from the analyses presented in the previous chapters, and it considers how sectoral policies, like innovation policies, can be appropriately translated into a regional setting. Regional policy suggestions are derived both from the theoretical framework developed, built on the concept of ‘territorial patterns of innovation’, and from interpretation of the results of the empirical analysis on the impact of knowledge and innovation on regional growth. Territorial patterns of innovation are understood — as explained in Chapter 6 — as being differentiated spatial variants of the linear knowledge → invention → innovation → development logical path, implying varied interregional cooperation processes in knowledge development and acquisition, and varied innovation and development outcomes.
