ABSTRACT

Spoken language is now an important part of English language study, with new units introduced at GCSE, as well as the existing A-level Language specifications. Now that it’s cheap and simple to record speech – on mobile phones as well as digital recorders – there is much more data to investigate. There are various corpora (collections) of spoken English available on the internet, with several millions of words taken from a variety of sources, formal and informal, different age groups, social and regional backgrounds.
