ABSTRACT
Out of 390 submarines built prior to November 1918, the Germans lost 192 to all causes during World War I. According to a 1922 German Naval Staff report, the U-boat arm suffered 515 officers and 4,849 men killed during operations. About 13,000 sailors had served in German submarines.1
Suffering such a high loss ratio – to both boats and personnel – the U-boat service presents an interesting source of opinion regarding the use of aircraft as anti-submarine weapons.
