ABSTRACT

Basic memory research has extensively investigated memory failures in the laboratory. This research has shown that memory failures may be attributed to: the difficulty of the memory task; the environmental causes that dispose a person to fail while performing the task; individual differences in approaches to memory tasks; and individual differences in processing tasks and causes. Nevertheless, memory tasks in everyday life often differ from the tasks used in basic research, making it necessary to find ways to extend basic theory to the performance of such tasks (Davies & Logie, 1993).
