ABSTRACT

The aims of this chapter are to stimulate ecologically valid research in the psychology of memory and of knowledge, as well as stimulating the future development of e-learning. Hermann Ebbinghaus, the founder of modern memory psychology, called attention to the application of his results to educational practice; especially his results concerning distributed practice and retention. An early textbook about memory psychology written by Offner (1913) Das Gedächtnis (Memory), also focused on the pedagogical applications of the scientific results. Nevertheless, more than 100 years later, Ebbinghaus’ and his successors’ results on massed and distributed practice have still not been applied in schools. This is more or less the general picture of applied memory psychology in education — even after Neisser (1978) called it “scandalous” and demanded more ecological memory research.
