The conflict between street vendors and local authorities: The case of market traders in Ankara, Turkey

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the basis and the nature of conflict between informal traders and state and public authorities in Ankara, the capital of Turkey. Since Hart’s study (1973), there has been a growing body of literature focusing on different aspects of the informal sector. Although prior research conducted in the informal sector demonstrated that informal occupations are extremely competitive and individualistic, the issue of conflict and competition have received little attention in the informal sector literature.
