Almost 400 years ago, tulip mania took hold of the Netherlands, and land and houses were exchanged for single bulbs that, it was hoped, would produce new, highly prized varieties.1 Today, the NovaCap Florales Future fund, has successfully convinced Dutch speculators to repeat the experience, with similar boom and bust results (Bickerton, 2003).
