ABSTRACT
Before examining “where” the PLA ground forces are located throughout China, it is first necessary to ask “why” they are stationed where they are. Or, what are the missions of the units scattered all over the country? Generally speaking, PLA ground forces are garrisoned throughout the country to protect China’s sovereignty from foreign and internal enemies, support national economic development, and assist in the maintenance of domestic stability. In this regard official Chinese statements provide the overall context for PLA dispositions, while details may be inferred from examination of geography and potential enemies.
