ABSTRACT

Because of the recent long period of Irish terrorist activity from 1969 to 2001, the British police have developed a well-regarded competency in counter-terrorism in partnership with MI5, MI6 and military special forces. Indeed, the police expertise was used to assist the Greek authorities in dismantling the 17 November Group. This chapter will provide an overview of UK counter-terrorism policing, review the impact of 9/11, discuss the major changes and issues that have arisen in the overall context of the domestic management of terrorism in the UK and refl ect on the implications of the London bombings of July 2005.
