ABSTRACT

The UK’s civil aviation industry is an important part of the National Critical Infrastructure. As a means of transportation it is inherently vulnerable to attack. When a bomb explodes on an airliner at an altitude of over 30,000 feet, the passengers and crew have no chance whatsoever of survival. It is mass murder in the skies. The huge payloads of modern jumbo jets maximise the carnage and because air travel is also inherently international, major attacks of this kind receive instant worldwide publicity.
