ABSTRACT

When you next meet a group of learners for the first time, take a look at the individuals assembled there. They will include people who feel excited, hopeful, fearful, anxious, vulnerable and impatient. There will be the keen and the curious, the cynical and the defensive. These feelings will be based, for the most part, on their assumptions about the course ahead. They will all have expectations about what is going to happen. They are likely to be asking themselves questions such as:

• Will it be death by PowerPoint? • Will I have to do those embarrassing role plays? • Will I have to speak? • Will we finish on time?
