ABSTRACT

Everyone is accustomed to reading non-verbal communication at some level, even if they are doing it unconsciously. Appearance and non-verbal communication are often all you have to go on when you first meet someone new which makes those first few minutes very important. If you form an initial impression of someone based on their non-verbal communication, then you may be inclined to interpret what they say or do afterwards in those terms. Even if your learners’ reading of your non-verbal communication is inaccurate, it is still important because it influences their response and behaviour. If the non-verbal communication message you are giving is at odds with what you are saying, the non-verbal message is usually perceived as more trustworthy.
