ABSTRACT

I once interviewed a teacher in further education about the impact on his work of a course he had done. The course was on counselling skills in education and training. One of his comments was: ‘As a result of the course, I now see students as human beings.’ He meant that he now saw beyond the particular categories that he or his institution had placed learners into, such as ‘mature’, ‘first year’ and so on, and was able to catch a glimpse of the individual behind the role of learner.
