ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Unit 3 introduces pragmatics, one part of the study of meaning. Unit 6 is about semantics, the other essential component. When people know a language they have a powerful system – grammar plus vocabulary – for communicating meanings. Semantics is the study of meanings as stored in language, waiting to be put to use. Pragmatics focuses on how speakers and writers actually use their language knowledge to convey meanings.
