INTRODUCTION Why study phonetics? Some knowledge of speech sounds is essential for any linguist. In the hierarchy of linguistic units (Figure 7.1) speech sounds are at the base. Sounds make up morphemes, which make up words which make up phrases which make up clauses which make up sentences which make up text ($Unit 7).
